The World Championships for me had a pretty dream ending, taking home the Gold Medal in Mens K1!!!

Throughout the event i’d not really paddled at the level I knew I could. I knew I was being too relaxed, not aggressive enough. For the finals I focused on pumping myself up as hard as I could and getting ready to have the fight of my life.

First ride didn’t go my way but I was feeling more myself for sure. 2nd ride I just gave it everything I had and got 1020 pts. The leading score at that point but definately not unbeatable, so 3rd ride i went even harder. I didn’t go as big as my 2nd ride but squeezed in a few extra moves to get 1053 points.

Then i had to watch as 4 great kayakers, Gerd, Nick, Stephen and Peter all went and gave it their all trying to beat my score. They all paddled great and Peter, who is a deadly competitor and amazing kayaker, very nearly got me. Finally though, luck and timing went my way and I took the win!!!

I never felt so good as when the results came out and I could see everyones faces. All my friends, family, Katya and many of the people who helped and supported me over the years all around enjoying the moment. And then all the GB team piling on top of me and sinking me. Seeing how happy and emotional Terry Best (friend and supporter for years) was was so so nice. Then seeing Guigui’s face after finally one of his amazing designs the Easymix 2008 got to the top!

The whole experience was one of the best moments in my life!

The whole event was such a fun time. Always something going on, great people, perfect water levels. Robson, the ICF and the judging team did a great job pulling it off!

Big props should also go out to GB’s Claire O’hara who won Gold in Squirt and Womens K1 and Palm’s Bren Orton who took the Bronze in the Junior Mens!

The journey I took to this point is pretty unusual. I loved kayaking since i was 12 and loved to freestyle kayak almost as long. After competing for most of my junior years i’d had a few successes but lost my way a bit about 4 years ago when I got a bit distracted by the party scene. I had a great time then but forgot what it was that i really wanted to do with my life.

I was working as a video kayaker on the Nile with NRE working for Davey O’hara with my buddy Anton and I was having a great time there. On the river every day, partying every night but at the same time i felt not truly happy.

I was missing something. About 3 months after i moved to Uganda I met Katya and together we at first went harder than ever in the bar but she also was so fired up on Freestyle that I began to find my fire for it again. Gradually my focus went off the bar and back onto being in my boat; surfing, catching air and throwing tricks. At this point i saw how Peter Csonka was training hard and kicking ass and I really admired his focus and determination. It was then I decided I was going to be a World Champion one day.

So we left Uganda and started to compete and train hard. Over time we got more and more successful in our competing and this last two years have been amazing. A win at last year’s World Cup, 2nd in the Europeans and now the World Champs Gold. It really has been the best couple of years.

We train hard and have done lots of work to get to this point and Katya has been the best coach you could have.
She also introduced me to many new ideas and approaches to life, we eat only raw fruit and vegetables for a start, we hardly drink any more and we meditate daily. All these aspects she introduced me to have had a profound effect on my happiness and kayaking. Life is for enjoying and improving yourself, this is what makes it so fun.

My next goals are to keep improving as a person, get my wave kayaking to the same level as my hole kayaking, keep competing on the highest levels, help Katya to get her goals, see more new places and to keep pushing ourselves and our kayaking as far as we can!

I have so many people to thank for getting me to this point: Shep, Sneaky, Terry and the whole Best family, Pete Caterall, Hippy Dave, Tim Ward, Jacko, Pete Astles, Sam Ward and Dennis Newton, Matt Chadder and Dickie. Wigan Canoeing Groups Eric Bradbury, Bob Andrews and Will Potts. Elton, Tim, Simon and Sophie from Reaseheath College.

All the Uganda/ NRE crew particularly Davey and Timmy.

Planning your holiday? Look no further than a wilderness experience in Sweden

Colin and Alison Smith loved Sweden so much that they moved out there. They bought a campsite on the banks of the Klaralven river and set up an outfitting business hiring out canoes and kit and providing a shuttle service for the many wilderness trips on their doorstep. Last Year they invited myself and my husband Mark to sample what they have to offer out there.

Last September, Mark and I flew to Torpe near Oslo with Ryan Air, caught a train to Oslo and were then picked up by Colin for a 3 hour drive to his home, a charming traditional Swedish house on the banks of the Klaralven River . Alison his wife had prepared a hot meal and had already packed everything ready for the trip for the following morning, so we could relax with a few glasses of wine the night before (the easiest preparation of any wilderness trip that I have ever done!!) The plan was to do a 3 day wilderness trip on the Svartalven river followed by a day’s paddling on their local Klaralven River.

The next morning the four of us loaded the car with the barrels and the dry bags and strapped two composite Gatz Prospector canoes on to the trailer. En route to the drop off point Colin and Alison took us to their campsite which they had just closed for the winter. An excellent site on the banks of the Klaralven. Visitors can either just stay and enjoy the tranquillity of the site or be a bit more adventurous and employ the equipment and shuttle services of Colin and Alison and go on a single or multiday canoe trip. As well as pitches for your tents the campsite also has stugas on site. These are little wooden huts with their own balcony and basic amenities such as a fridge, beds and table and chairs - an alternative for those visitors wanting something a little bit more substantial than canvas as their shelter.

We left the campsite and headed on to pick up their friend Fred who drove us to the get on point an hour and a half away at Tyfors.

We finally set off on the tranquil waters of the Svatalven at about noon. The river was wide at this point and there was an immediate sense of remoteness even though in reality a road was not far away. The dense forests on the bank were wild and impenetrable and there were lots of evidence of beaver activity. We had never paddled the Gatz Prospector before and we were soon impressed by how smoothly it cut through the water fully loaded

After lunch we had 2 portages to navigate. The first was short and straightforward. The second was a little longer and the canoe trolleys were indispensable to pull the canoes along the road for approx half a mile. We got back on the water under a dam at a very picturesque point in the river where it had narrowed down quite considerably.

Eventually the river widened out again and we reached our first stop over, a designated camping spot ideal for people on multi day trips complete with fire, pit and wooden shelter. The banks are dotted with camping spots like these, some with a drop toilet to try and help reduce pressure on the local environment. Mark and I set up camp overlooking the river and then we went searching for fire wood. We dragged back the wood we had collected passing a bright orange mushroom the size of a dinner plate on the forest floor. Mark then set about chopping the firewood while Colin went for a solitary paddle in the fading light on the hunt for beaver activity. As the darkness came so did the stars and the stillness and peacefulness of the riverside were framed by the twinkling overhead. We enjoyed a hearty meal of venison, bacon and pasta round the campfire, feasted our eyes on the stars once more and then went to bed.

The next day the river became much narrower and twisting which enhanced the sense of remote wilderness. It was a clear sunny day and the mirror image of the trees lining the banks seemed to plunge down towards the river bed, a reflection only spoilt by the eventual rippling as we cut through the water.

The river eventually opened up and we came to a point where Alison and Colin would normally veer right to complete a circular route their customers used quite regularly. However we paddled on past this point – so it was new ground to us all!!

The second campsite was bigger than the first with 2 fireplaces which we took advantage of. We sat around one of the fires and cooked on the other – and boy did we cook a lot!! Mark and Colin made pizza garlic bread which was then followed by meat balls and potatoes – we had planned on a third course of barbecued bananas stuffed with chocolate but our stomachs could take no more so we retreated to our sleeping bags defeated.

The final morning the river opened up into a lake as we progressed to a more built up area with lodges dotting the river bank. We portaged a dam in the town and got back in the river at a much narrower and faster flowing point. The nature of the river once more became twisty and remote and we stopped for lunch in the sun. Soon after our lunch stop the river became wider once again as we headed towards the town of Hallefors. We knew our journey would soon be over as the river hinted at the built up area to come with mills and houses increasingly scattering the banks and the horizon line. Our wilderness trip would be over within the hour

The next day after a night back in civilisation we headed out to the Klaralven River to paddle from Karabro to Branas while trying out a few more of the Gatz canoes recommended by Alison and Colin, the Orca and the Yaqui – very different canoes and both really good to paddle.

The river was large and very wide with lots of water with a good flow for much of the stretch but nothing more than grade one. The scenery was stunning made ever more poignant by the sighting of an elk and its baby on the banks of the river as we paddled on by.

This image is a fitting memoir for our time in Sweden as it epitomises its proximity to nature and we would highly recommend not only the country but also Colin and Alison’s set up there. They are trying to make this experience accessible to all. The trips that they organise are well thought out – they are remote yet safe with easy access if needed. They also approach the trips in a highly flexible manner and are happy to shorten or extend the trips with very little notice according to the needs of their customers

News: Zet Raptor Available now from Brookbank Canoes and ON DEMO!

We have just received our first stock of Zet Raptor kayaks. And at Brookbank we are pretty excited! We can't wait to take the boat out and put through its paces, and we bet you can't either. That's why the first one we got is out on the demo fleet. Word from the guys who have been lucky enough to take it out have given me really positive feed back, and one of our customers from Lancaster has said he thinks its even better than the Nomad!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Zet Raptor here's the info. Straight from the horses mouth (their web site):

People will obviously want to compare the Raptor with other boats of its class. Reviews from people who have paddled it I have heard say that the boat is better than the Nomads and the Jefes. Though only a bit of serious paddling and some in depth post paddle banter will determine the answer.

Halton Demo Day Sunday Feb 6th 2011

FAO All Local Canoe Clubs and Paddlers

Brookbank Lancaster are hosting a demo day in February at Halton Rapids on the River Lune. We will be bringing a wide variety of white water Demo kayaks to these events for all those attending to try out. We are hoping to get a good turn out from all the local canoe clubs and local paddlers. This Demo day will be completely free of charge to paddlers to try out any and all of the boats we bring along.

The event is planned for Sunday the 6th February 2011 and the event will run from 10am until 4pm or until everyone gets to cold and goes home. The event will be run from a car park at the top of Mill Lane next to Halton Rapids on river right of the Lune. It is just off junction 34 of the M6 at Lancaster and I have attached a map to assist paddlers with the location of where the event will be run from and where vehicles can be parked during the event.

Obviously we will bring as many boats as possible and any special requests can be forwarded to myself at this email address and we will attempt to accommodate them, but also paddlers are encouraged to bring there own boats and generally just have a good day out on the water. Please note that paddlers will have to bring all there own kit and paddles as this will not be supplied.

If clubs and paddlers could send an email with any interest and some suggested numbers for attendance in order to give us some idea before the event it would be greatly appreciated. Also on receiving this email if there is anyone you can think of that would benefit from this email please forward it on.

Final Note, paddlers will be paddling at there own risk and should be competent to paddle to the conditions of the water on the day and safety or instruction will not be supplied by Brookbank.

'Steve Fisher - Black Book' | May 2008
Over a period of ten years, Emmy award winning filmmaker Scott Lindgren and kayaker Steve Fisher worked and paddled together on many rivers in various parts of the world. After a time, Scott had amassed a huge amount of footage and began to realize that there was a valid story to be told. Once it was decided upon, the two worked together to shoot the final segments and tie the story together.
The story starts on the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet and takes you back to his early days in South Africa. From there you’ll enjoy the best of ten seasons on the Zambezi followed by his history in North America including the good times of the notorious ‘Riot bus.’ We then take a look at where our sport is today and Fisher’s views on the scene. His chosen direction is then portrayed in the recent ‘Red Bull Recon’ in Quebec Canada and a multi-day expedition on the wild Murchison falls section of the White Nile in Uganda. While the film no doubt focuses on Fisher and his misadventures it’s also quick to showcase other characters that he hangs with and the good times had by all – “After all, it’s not about where we go or what we do, it’s who we are, and who we’re with!”

The Last Descent September 2009

MISSION

The Last Descent is a project to raise public awareness that some of the world's most beautiful, culturally rich and ecologically significant rivers are threatened by large scale hydropower projects. The team will produce a whitewater adventure film with the focus on international rivers that are threatened by dams. The team of world class kayakers will descend three major rivers self supported by whitewater kayaks in order to fully illustrate the beauty and value of the rivers as they are, possibly for the last time.

Methods

Route:The team will travel with kayaks and film equipment to Nepal, India , Africa and California. The film will focus on three of the worlds great rivers: the Marsyandi River in Nepal , the Brahmaputra River in India and the White Nile River in Uganda which are all threatened or in the process of being dammed.

Equipment: Whitewater kayaks, Sony high definition cameras, necessary camping equipment

Timeline: Filming 10/07-10/08, editing and promoting 10/08-3/09, release and promotional tour 3/09-5/09

Media Projects: Full-length documentary style film, interactive web site, national promotional tour, print advertisements and articles.

Collaboration: The team will be exploring with other profes

From paddling the wildlife rich swamps and mangroves of the Carolinas to the icebergs of Newfoundland; from surfing the "zipper" at Tybee Island, Georgia to playing in the tidal flows around Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy; and from capturing the iconic urban landscapes of New York City to the remote fishing villages of Quebec's north shore, Eastern Horizons will inspire paddlers and non-paddlers alike to get out and explore the ocean!

Our Tyne Tour Story

Phew, what an amazing weekend but I cannot think for a moment where it went?!

Other than the chilly weather it was a weekend enjoyed by everyone. As you may have read in one of our previous posts we went along strong with what ended out as two and half vans worth of kit for you all.

After setting up on the Friday afternoon and speaking to the fellow paddlers, the Brookbank Team heading off into Hexham town for some food before heading out to a club after an invite from Lincoln University Canoe and Kayak Team, for what turned out to be a... late night. Myself (Dan) and Gavin got a good chance to speak to a load of you guys and we remember having a good chat with the guys from Leeds University and Sheffield University. From what I heard as sadly we didn't get a chance to paddle was that the Tyne was in good flow after a quick decline from epic, and was a good run for everyone who took part.

I'm sure a lot of you headed over to see the Hexham Fireworks on the Saturday night but if you didn't, no doubt you saw them from whether you are.

Sadly we are back now and after a good sleep and a long HOT shower, we are back in our stores. Now we have just got to start thinking about next years and how it will be difficult to top this years after such a good weekend...

For you Tyne Tour veterans out there you will know that we are at the event every year strong with plenty of goodies and boats for you. Right, ok, to me to you... Ouch!

We are busy busy setting up for the Scottish Canoe Show which is taking place this weekend in Perth and after days of preparation we are finally there and getting ready to go! As you can see from the photo below it was a wet, cold and dark start in Manchester this morning as we were about to leave to meet the guys from our Perth store....

Right, a little while later and a cup of tea, the set up has commenced and once complete the stand will be amazing with a lot of kit on show for you to see and buy.

Seaquest and Seatour 2010

September 11^th saw the eighth annual running of Out door Adventure Groups’ (OAG) Charity SeaQuest race in Fleetwood, Lancashire. A spring tide approaching 10 metres and a poor long range forecast resulted in big changes to this years event. After discussions with the harbour master, with advice from the coastguard race organisers decided to activate plan B. The new route incorporated a challenging 15km orienteering race taking in eight checkpoints along the River Wyre estuary combined with a hard first leg against the tidal flow. There was also a 5km race- Seatour that ran simultaneously, taking in four checkpoints. Maps for both races were provided along with grid references for each punch. A new starting point at the River Wyre Country Park, Stannah proved very successful. Two specially erected marquees for registration and food acted as a colourful focal point and provided welcome shelter from the wind and occasional showers.

Conditions were good, spring tides and cool weather with a force 3 wind and some showers helped to provide all fifty-seven kayakers with an enjoyable and challenging day. A race brief was given and the Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Russell Forsyth attended to signal the start of the race. The air horn blew and they were off, all competitors racing down the creek providing a colourful, chaotic but hugely entertaining scene as they jostled for position. The field was made up of sea kayaks, general-purpose kayaks and doubles, the open canoes choosing to avoid the forecasted bad weather. It soon spread out as the stronger paddlers and faster boats battled the upstream flood.

Checkpoints consisted of a mixture of land and water based punches. Marshals were waiting at strategic points to monitor competitors’ progress, to punch race cards and to paddle back with the last of the competitors, two safety boats were also on hand. At the end, racers left their boats and ran up the slip to the finish line cheered on by supporters. They handed in their race cards and were presented with a certificate of their time and a good old-fashioned stick of Blackpool rock!!

Brookbank Canoes & Kayaks attended with a range of boats and paddle boards to try out. The paddle boarding attempts in particular proved to be very entertaining to watch.

Once paddlers were safely off the water, everyone enjoyed hotpot and cake as they awaited the prize presentations. Spirits were high and there was a friendly atmosphere.

Rob Sutcliffe, Chairman of Leukaemia Busters ( www.leukaemiabusters.org.uk), OAGs chosen charity attended and was given a cheque for £2000, he also presented the trophies along with vouchers which were kindly donated by our sponsors, Brookbank. SeaQuest winner, John Willacy from Anglesey completed the distance in one hour thirty minutes. SeaTour winner Paul Harwood won by a nose in an exciting finish, with a time of forty eight minutes. A raffle followed and the proceeds from this and the race raised a further £500 for Leukaemia Busters.

OAG extends their thanks to all competitors who had travelled from distances as far as Anglesey and Dumbarton to support the race. They would also like to thank Brookbank, the Mayor, Rob Sutcliffe and the SeaQuest organisers. OAG would love to invite all competitors and any other interested paddlers to come and participate in SeaQuest 2011. It’s a brilliant social event which is definitely worth the effort to support and with your help, they will be able to continue to support a very worth while charity.

The Brookbank Photo Competition

I am sure you as many of us do, have a bunch of photo albums laying around somewhere with some photos of past times. I myself the other day was flicking through some old albums and found some paddling photos from my times at University.

After running into the office one Monday morning we decided to hold of competition to show case everyones best paddling photos. Each month a photo is picked by Brookbank's finest and the winner shown on our homepage. All you have to do to enter is email your photo to marketing@brookbank.co.uk by the 24th of each month.

We have been jumping around the shop and office because of the arrival of the new Moby wetsuits which are now in stock. But, let's be honest wetsuits are not the usual banter at the pub, so why the excitement??

Yet another demo day! - Wigan 'come and try it' day

If you haven't guessed by now, we have been really busy doing various demo events for various groups across the country with the most recent being in Wigan. On Saturday 24th July, the Wigan Canoe Group held a come and try it day for the public to come and try out the exciting sport of kayaking/canoeing. The day was a success with lots of new people attending.

We took along a vast number (and mean our biggest van FULL) of our demo boats including our Hobie Adventure Island with the sailing spec, a fantastic boat which was ideal for the Lake at the Scotsman Flash Water Activity Centre. BBQ food was supplied at the event which is always a winner with Brookbank Staff, all in all a great day held by Wigan Canoe Club and we hope to be attending next years!

Macclesfield Demo Day

Ok, so it has been a while since we posted anything on here but we have been very busy... Amongst all manner of things that has been going on, one of our recent trips has been hosting a demo evening for the Macclesfield Canoe Club. And, although the weather was pretty rubbish, it appeared everyone had a pretty good time. We managed to get 32 boats to the event of all different kinds for paddlers to try and we even enjoyed talking to some of the locals who had also popped down.

We are always happy to meet fellow paddlers and to get involved with local clubs so if there is anything you would like us to be involved in, feel free to call us or just pop in!

Brookbank London Demo Day

On Saturday the 19th June, Brookbank London held their first demo day held at the Young Herts Mariners Base in North London. The event was open to anyone and free to attend and was a day with a vast fleet of boats for people to try out on the lake or to just give something different a go. Despite the weather being temperamental at times, everyone who attended managed to have a good time.

The day began early morning with the set of the registration post, the un-loading of the massive fleet of demo boats from the vans and finally setting up the stands before people started arriving. Everyone who was working at the event was in good spirits (no doubt helped from pub the night before watching the World Cup). At 10am people started arriving ready for a day of fun on the water as well as having the chance to seek answers to any questions they had from experts from Brookbank as well as the manufacturers themselves.

After a bacon butty we were all ready to go!

We all had a great time talking to fellow or new paddlers as well as having the chance to have a mess around on the water ourselves (the Hobbie trimaran was defiantly a highlight of the day for the Brookbank team).

Some of the Team at Stockport joined the day travelling down with three vans and two trailers worth the night before. With members of Stockport and London at the event it gave us a chance to talk with people from the area where our new superstore opened in December 2009.

The new boats are both exciting and innovative where Jackson have spared no cost on these tools of mayhem. The new star series has a new shape making it the must have toy for playboating. The designers went with the brief - short short short! and so everything about the boat has been made easier with bigger results.

The new Fun range has been three years in designing to ensure that the designs were absolutely perfect, and what a result!
